durability of bamboo products
how long does bamboo last outdoors?
- fences and screens - around 8-12 years.
- it can be much higher depending on sun exposure
- uv is the damaging factor - it makes the bamboo go brittle
- bamboo doesn't rot as long as it is not in contact with soil
- treatment after sun exposure helps considerably lengthen lifespan
can i keep it green?
no, all bamboo will go the sandy colour of dry bamboo. there is no way of keeping it green.
furniture and other interior elements will be made with properly dried bamboo, outdoor products will usually be made with freshly cut green bamboo.

bamboo poles
- bamboo might well crack when used in the round
- some varieties crack more than others
- usually this won't affect the structural integrity
- for critical joints bambusero binds the bamboo with a strong lashing or whipping
- never put bamboo in contact with the ground or it will rot
can i paint bamboo?
yes but it's only worth it if you remove the protective surface layer by sanding or scraping, which is very labour intensive. if you don't, the paint or varnish will not penetrate and will flake off. alternatively you can wait until it is weathered and then clean and apply your coating. more info on the link below.
what about furniture?
all bambusero furniture is indoor, so it will last forever if not given a hard time. it will probably crack and change colour, but this will not compromise it's structural integrity.
cracking is more of a problem in dry centrally heated houses, or where it is subject to wide temperature differences.
