Structures

Bamboo is a fantastic material for constructing ephemeral structures. It is very strong and lightweight so lends itself to being handled and quickly put together. The natural grace and beauty of the material can really be shown off too. Below are photos of structures I have made recently.

Auckland Flower Show 08

I built this arch for the Landsendt wedding garden at the 08 AFS. We won overall Silver Award for the Feature Garden and a Gold Award for the lighting. The arch was a departure for me in that it used curved bamboo canes. I had to provide a focal point to the garden as well as an obvious entrance which could be spotted from afar.

kelvin's sculpture

Kelvin Chua came to me with a plan to build this bamboo sculpture in his garden for the 2007 Ellerslie Flower Show. it's a pretty free form affair, great fun to build and quite striking.

Bamboo and timber pergola

Bamboo doesn't last when in contact with the soil. So a good idea is to use treated timber as the main structural elements in a pergola and use bamboo as the support material. This way the timber will last and you can replace the bamboo down the line as when you need to.

Bamboo pavilion

We were very thankful for this pavilion while manning th stand at the 06 Ellerslie Flower Show. The sun was beating down and the shade provided was welcome, as was the breeze .

Other bamboo structures

These are photos of other structures I have built over the years. They are good to browse to get ideas. A lot can be done with bamboo, and hopefully these can inspire you.
